My sister sings this song to her kids to help them learn the alphabet and the sounds of the letters. It goes like this:
apple, apple, ah ah ah
baby, baby, buh buh buh
cookie, cookie, kuh kuh kuh
dolly, dolly, duh, duh duh
elbow, elbow, eh eh eh
flower, flower, fuh, fuh fuh... and on and on. You get the picture. So, it's bedtime the older kids are already in bed, but William had a nap, so he was still awake. He crawled onto the bench at the kitchen table because he wanted a snack. He turned to his mom (Tania) and said "apple." I believe he also walked over to her, took her hand and walked her to the fridge to point to the apples (his most effective means of communication). Tania didn't really want to give one to him. He usually won't eat apples if they are already cut, he never eats the whole apple, and when he eats them, he doesn't really swallow much. Chew it up, spit it out. Chew it up. Spit it out. At first glance I thought this was his way of getting the apple peel off, but I don't know how much of the meat of the fruit actually gets digested. So Tania is resisting and telling him no. A few minutes later he is really upset because he still wants an apple. He turns around (again on the bench) and in the saddest, most pleading voice that a 20 month old child can muster he says "apple, apple, ah ah ah".
I just busted up laughing. It was like, you can't say apple without the ah ah ah part. Or maybe..."if I do it just right, like mom does it in the song, maybe she'll give it to me." So funny. Kids are smart. They know how to get what they want!!
